THE PROBLEM

The brain drain caused by the continuous mobilization of health care professionals out of the country to countries with better work conditions, presents a dismal picture for all, but 24-HealthLink hence offers you an opportunity to stay above the disaster projected.

How?

First, considering statistics that since 1963, Nigeria has produced an estimate of only 93,000 Doctors.

With the brain drain, we now have only 24,000 doctors available to about 218 million people, leaving the current doctor-patient ratio at approximately 1:10,000. This is a stark contrast with WHO’s recommendation of One doctor to 600 patients!
Consequently, Nigeria now requires at least 363,000 additional doctors to meet the needs of the population.

This has created tremendous adversity for the Nigerian people in terms of access to quality health care, and it keeps getting geometrically worse. Sadly, no government or stakeholder in Nigeria have come up with anything meaningful….

A decade ago, this was much easier with about 1 doctor to 3,000 patients.

What are the implications?
(1) For the patient:

• Progressive difficulty in assessing the right healthcare practice (having the money to pay will no longer be enough).
• Geometric increase in healthcare expenditure.
• Increase in maternal & child death.
• Increase in preventable deaths.
• Ridiculous time-wasting at the hospital.

(2) For the health worker in the country:
Proliferation of sharp practices, burnout, intense apathy towards the patient, gross medical negligence, work related stress, job dissatisfaction, penury.
